March in the High Country: Harvest Vibes, Open Gardens, and Village Markets

As summer begins to fade into autumn, the High Country truly comes alive. March is a month of transition—the days are still warm enough for orchard walks, but the evenings bring that crisp mountain air that makes our wood-fire heaters so inviting. If you are joining us at the summit this month, here are the local highlights you won’t want to miss:

Art & History

Culture & History in Benalla

A short, scenic drive from the farm takes you to Benalla, where art and history collide this month.

Threads of Kelly (Until March 22nd): Visit the Benalla Art Gallery to see the fascinating Desmonde Downing: Threads of Kelly exhibition. It features rare watercolour costume designs from the 1950s Douglas Stewart play, offering a stylish look at our region’s most famous outlaw legend.

Outdoor Immersion

Gardens & Music

March is the perfect time for outdoor immersion before the winter chill sets in.

Open Gardens Victoria – The Barwitian (March 7-8): Located in Barwite (near Mansfield), this is a rare chance to see one of Australia’s most evocative naturalistic gardens. With 20,000 plants set against the Broken River, it’s a masterclass in resilient, beautiful design.

Spring Ditch in Stanley (March 7): For those who love a bit of village charm, head to Stanley for Spring Ditch. It’s a day of great Australian music, local food, and old-school sports (like sack races!) with a modern, festive spin.

Seasonal Produce

The March Market Trail

Stock up on the region’s best seasonal produce to bring back to your kitchen at Elevation652:

Moyhu Lions Country Market (March 21st): Our local favorite! Just down the road in Moyhu, perfect for a slow Saturday morning browse.

Myrtleford Farmers Market (March 28th): An accredited market where the producers are the heroes. Look for late-summer stone fruits and local cheeses.

Benalla Lakeside Market (March 28th): A beautiful lakeside setting featuring handcrafted treasures and farm-fresh veggies.

March escape

The “Direct” Difference
